Common questions
My disposal hums but will not turn. What is wrong?
It is jammed. The motor is getting power but the plate cannot move. There is a reset button underneath and a hex socket in the base for freeing it — if that does not work, something is lodged that needs the unit opened.
How long do garbage disposals last?
Usually eight to twelve years. Once the housing leaks, it is a replacement rather than a repair.
What should never go in a disposal?
Grease, coffee grounds, fibrous vegetable peel, bones, pasta and rice. All of them either wrap the plate or set solid further down the line.
